Why Art?
If you've had a child in preschool before, you know that there is no shortage of art projects that come home. Though sometimes you might think this never-ending stream of hand print animals, tempera paint encrusted paper, and magazine collages is simply an evil plot by teachers to plaster every wall in your home with your kid's art, there is more to the story than meets the eye.
Art as an educational tool...
Most children LOVE art time. They look forward to it. Some love the inevitable sensory exploration of paint, glue, and glitter on hands, while some kids avoid it like the plague. Regardless, nearly all children are fully engaged and receptive when participating in art. What does that mean for educators? It means that during that window of time a child is highly likely to be present, aware, focused, open, and EXCITED and therefore it's the perfect opportunity to teach! Using art as our Trojan Horse, we are able to introduce and discuss basic concepts like weather, seasons, plant cycles, patterns, etc., which provide a foundation that we can then build upon. By incorporating tools like scissors, rulers, stencils, stickers and stamps we are helping children to develop fine motor skills- which as we know are essential in daily life. One of the most valuable benefits of using art to teach is that it's tangible. When a child takes their art home it's an opportunity to remember and share what they learned that day. Each time they run to a family member beaming with pride to tell them all about their project, they are recalling that new information and are essentially retracing a neurological pathway in their brain; building their knowledge bank! For these very reasons art plays an integral role in our curriculum at Hop, Skip & Jump and we're so grateful that our parents wouldn't have it any other way. :)
